As New Jersey’s cannabis business community awaits for Gov. Phil Murphy to sign into law legislation that will launch the state’s recreational marijuana industry, it’s not waiting to meet up.

His signature, which some had hoped would come next week, represents the official start of the green rush in the Garden State with the promise of tapping into billions of new dollars from a highly lucrative industry.

“Since Election Day, when New Jersey voters overwhelmingly approved legalization of adult-use cannabis, we’ve seen a huge surge in interest on how to get into the cannabis space,” said Enrique Lavin, publisher and editor of NJ Cannabis Insider, the Garden State’s only weekly trade journal dedicated to covering the ins and outs of the legal cannabis industry. “Every insider I’ve spoken to in recent weeks says the same thing. It’s as if the floodgates have been opened.”

In preparation for the launch of the recreational market, NJ Cannabis Insider has scheduled a series of networking sessions and conferences. Its first virtual event is set for Tuesday morning. The two-hour video-conferencing meetup sold out with more that 100 registered to attend. Several dozen have added their names to the wait list, organizers say.

“Often times starting up can be very costly and very confusing,” said David Serrano, chief of Business Development for Harvest360, a cannabis and technology consultancy group. “Having a supportive and credible network is key to business survival and with COVID, networking is almost impossible. A networking experience like this is a game-changer and we really look forward to meeting entrepreneurs and lending our support in any way we can.”

Executives from Harvest360 will be among a handful of sponsors supporting the virtual meetup, which includes brief roundtable discussions, speed-networking sessions and a casual lounge space. Organizers say attendees will be able to meet dozens of people by the time the event is over.

Additional sponsors seeking to connect with this highly strategic and motivated audience are the law firms Brach Eichler and Genova Burns, which have long-established cannabis law practices, and Supreme Security Systems, which already services cannabis growers in New Jersey.

“Security detail is so imperative that your business license depends heavily on this one section,” said Dan Jensen, an executive at Supreme Security Systems. “The security technology, especially in this industry, is ever changing and you will find the value in having a trusted cannabis security professional.”

Confirmed attendees include executives representing firms in accounting, real estate, marketing, PR, delivery, laboratories as well as consultants involved in past cannabis license application rounds. Board members from New Jersey CannaBusiness Association, the state’s largest cannabis trade group; and the diversity, equity and inclusion arm of the National Cannabis Industry Association will also offer roundtable discussions.

“Every industry has historically benefitted from networking. Whether on local, state, national or international platforms, the convergence of ideas and people has always led to improved communication, inspiration, and innovation,” said Edmund DeVeaux, president of the New Jersey CannaBusiness Association. “There is a new excitement in the industry since New Jersey adopted legalization of cannabis. It has opened us up to inquiries on how to enter the cannabis and hemp industry from all over.”

Last year, aside from producing local webinars, NJ Cannabis Insider partnered with Advance Local, the parent company of NJ.com, MassLive.com, SILive.com and PennLive.com, among others, to host a national livestream with power players in the cannabis industry. Congressmen Jim McGovern, who represents Massachusetts, and Earl Blumenauer of Oregon were among the special keynote speakers.

On March 9 and 10, the NJ Cannabis Insider will host the first of two annual conferences, featuring local and national industry leaders, using a virtual platform that allows for organized discussions and networking sessions. Early-bird registration began this week. Space is limited.
